little by little

i am going to do the $20 challenge.

i have never tried this before but i want to get rid of my $6000 credit card debt, and making measly payments each month is weighing me down. i started out last month on 3/1/08 and plunked 20 bones in an envelope at work. i hid it in my drawer. i add to it when i get some extra loot such as a rebate or cash back from using my credit card. i am now up to $179 because i just got $55 for doing yardwork for a guy on craigslist last sunday for 3 hours. easy money. it is good to escape the miasma of the office for a bit.

my hopes:
$100 by 4/1. check.
$200 by 5/1.
$500 by 6/1.
$800 by 7/1.
$1200 by 8/1.
$1500 by 9/1.

The envelope sounds like a great idea! Welcome to the challenge!

Never thought about keeping my envelope at work. It would be great because I rarely leave the office when I am here and so I am unlikely to spend it. Interesting.

I keep my tip box at the office. I highly recommend storing the savings at the office - fewer temptations, close to my bank, and if there's the $2-3 collection for something, I'm covered. Just make sure your drawer is lockable.

@ janH - yeah, having the cash to look at is encouraging, when i keep track of the money i input on the outside of the envelope. i love it!

@ sagegirl - when it is at work, i can keep it safe. i don't spend cash there.

@ baselle - what do you mean by 'tip box'? my envelope is locked each night.
